Intergovernmental disorders

For over a year now, EU governments have been bickering in public about anti-crisis measures. The disputes have even permeated national coalition governments .

This is typically what happens in the absence of any authoritative and respected guidance from the European Commission.

Under the well-tested Community method, discussions should exclusively take place within the Ecofin Council on the basis of a Commission proposal and end up with a vote on a compromise submitted to the European Parliament for democratic sanctioning.

The current disorderly situation takes Europe back to messy European reactions to the 1920s crisis.
