EU promotes smart metering in fight against global warming

Sir,
Regarding ‘EU promotes smart metering in fight against global warming‘:
‘Smart’ seems to be the solution to climate change these days: smart cars, smart meters, smart grids, smart cities. PWR has produced a position paper on smart grids and their cousin smart meters, and it is in the context of this paper and the statement from [...]

The lack of logic in banning light bulbs

Posted by Peter Thornes, ceolas.net on 11/09/09

Sir,
Regarding ‘EU light bulb ban attacked from all sides as phase-out starts‘:
The ban on ordinary light bulbs is an extraordinary consumer ban on a product that is safe to use.
We are not talking about banning lead paint here - and light bulbs don’t give out any CO2 gas. Power stations do.
Note therefore the consumer legislation [...]

EU chief: 'Energy and climate are today's coal and steel'

Sir,
Regarding ‘EU chief: ‘Energy and climate are today’s coal and steel’‘:
PWR’s business is monitoring the development of the renewable energy sector (RES) and climate change policies in Europe. As such, we are reasonably well placed to comment on the success or otherwise of the EU’s policies in these two linked areas.
Mr Barroso believes that EU [...]

Light, heat and climate change

Posted by Mike Parr, PWR on 31/08/09

Sir,
Regarding ‘EU light bulb ban attacked from all sides as phase-out starts‘:
There is a great deal of hot air being generated in what passes for the ‘debate’ on more efficient lighting. A couple of stats would be helpful. In a home that is heated by oil or gas (and has no air conditioning), the two [...]

Energy labels, pin heads and angels

In reaction to the EurActiv article:

EU lawmakers reject revised energy labels

Sir,
Regarding ‘EU lawmakers reject revised energy labels‘:
The current dispute concerning the Energy Labelling Directive between the Parliament on one hand and the Commission and the Council on the other, is taking a theological course along the lines of ‘how many angels can dance on the head of a pin?’.
All parties agree that due to technical advances, the [...]

Compact fluorescent lamps cause more suffering

In reaction to the EurActiv article:

MEP goes on defensive over light bulb ban

Sir,
Regarding ‘MEP goes on defensive over light bulb ban‘:
CFL-type energy-saving lamps are hated by the 1-3% of the population who suffer from exposure to electromagnetic fields, like those emitted by CFLs. They cause electrically hypersensitive people to become ill.
We investigated which EMFs cause these effects, and found that the CFLs consume electricity in a very [...]

The Irrational EU Ban on Light Bulbs

In reaction to the EurActiv article:

MEP goes on defensive over light bulb ban

Sir,
Regarding ‘MEP goes on defensive over light bulb ban‘:
Eco-design statement December 8:
“The regulation [to 'phase out' incandescent lights] is only one of the Ecodesign measures that will be adopted by the Commission over the coming months, targeting many more products such as consumer electronics, white goods or heating appliances.”
Are we living in the European Union [...]

Why a ban on light bulbs is wrong

Posted by Dr. Peter Thornes, Ceolas.net on 06/02/09
In reaction to the EurActiv article:

MEP goes on defensive over light bulb ban

Sir,
Regarding ‘MEP goes on defensive over light bulb ban‘:
First of all: What is easily forgotten is that this is a ban on a safe, popular product. We are not talking about banning lead paint or fireworks here.
Around 9 out of every 10 lights purchased in every European country are of this kind, according to the [...]

EU to switch off traditional light bulbs by 2012

Sir,
Regarding your article ‘EU to switch off traditional light bulbs by 2012‘:
I try to be as green as the next person and understand the need to reduce the use of incandescent and halogen light bulbs. But has anyone else had the difficulties I have encountered while reading by these newer so-called efficient light bulbs?
I have [...]
