Regarding ‘Federalists in attempt to upgrade Lisbon Treaty‘:
UK Liberal Democrat MEP Andrew Duff’s initiative is most welcome and timely.
The right of each and every member state to veto treaty revisions has become intolerable, as demonstrated by the ordeal of Lisbon ratification.
As with any international organisation’s charter or federal state’s constitution, revisions of EU treaties should be decided by a super-qualified majority of member states.
UEF FRANCE has argued in favour of scrapping the veto in an open letter to MEPs (see ‘www.uef.fr’).
As German Chancellor Angela Merkel put it (in reference to the revision necessitated for strengthening EU economic governance) , we cannot accept EU treaty revisions becoming impossible, for this would mean the end of any possible evolution of Europe.
