Sir,

Regarding ‘Sports policy could help build ‘European identity’‘:

Don’t ask what Europe can do for sport but what sport can do for Europe.

Promoting European identity and unity through sporting events does not require much funding!

For example, providing EU-27 national athletes with European flags and badges to be worn along with national ones at the 2012 Olympic Games in London would not ruin the EU budget…but would do more for European citizenship than many previous costly ‘communications’ operations.

  1. “Promoting European identity and unity through sporting events does not require much funding!”

That’s probably true, but it would require justification.

What would be the point in it? Athletes enjoy competing under their national flags, and I haven’t noticed a great clamour of sportsmen and women wishing to compete under a European flag.

One only needs to visit a sports stadium to notice that fans are extremely keen on supporting their own nations. They don’t wave European flags, they wave their national flags.

So your proposal may not cost much, but at present nobody seems to be interested in it.
