Barroso II must turn carbon cuts into growth
Sir,
Regarding ‘Barroso II must turn carbon cuts into growth‘:
You say climate campaigners are arguing that the European Commission must support energy efficiency and renewables rather than nuclear and clean coal.
This is true of some climate campaigners, but not all. Some of us now accept that the climate crisis is so great that we need all of them.
However well we do on energy efficiency, Europe will not be 100% renewable until 2040 at the earliest, so we need low-carbon bridge technologies, including nuclear and carbon capture and storage (‘clean coal’ is not a good name for this, as it won’t be totally clean, but it will be low carbon.)
